AUTOMOBILE, IONIZATION AND THE LIGHTNING

 The primarily metal structure - conducting - of a car in fact an excellent lightning protection (effect of " Faraday screen room").  One practically does not know a case of cars whose occupants wounded or were only inconvenienced by a direct or indirect attack of the lightning.  It is the case in particular Physicists who study on the ground - and in real time - the course of the storms and are by need in the heart of the stormy phenomenon, with often of the principal or secondary discharges very close to the vehicle (case of the studies carried out in particular in certain particularly struck down areas of Auvergne in France). 

 It should be remembered that the current tires contain additives making them slightly conducting, thus ensuring the regular flow of the static heads acquired by the body because of the friction of the air .  It is followed from there:

-         - that the car can run out the addition of loads permanently create by a ionizer placed in the cockpit, without any risk of " saturation " for the passengers;

-         - that in case - very improbable - of attack by a stormy discharge, the flow will be done some in any case by the arc completing of the current of the lightning between the metal rim of the wheels and the ground:  the intensity of this current (thousands of Amps....) cannot forward to in no case by the matter of the tire.  For the same reason, it is quasi-impossible that the pre-discharge coming from the ground - and starting the " channel of flash " - can leave the car which will not have been able to acquire the load essential to the constitution of this pre-discharge. 

 In conclusion, the passengers of a car could not more be inconvenienced by the loads produced by a ionizer (OR' IONS type of course) only by the loads developed by the stormy phenomena - thousands or million times more intense!  - that they will meet or cross.
